Conducting Criminal Record Checks in South Carolina

In order to be employed by or to provide caregiver services at a licensed day care facility, an applicant must first undergo a state fingerprint review to determine any state criminal history and a fingerprint review by the Federal Bureau of Investigation to determine any other criminal history. Unless otherwise required by law, criminal history checks are not required for volunteers or for certified education personnel who have undergone criminal records checks as part of the certification process.

Fingerprinting of candidates for training as law enforcement officers is required. In addition, fingerprinting is required from employees in the private security industry who are required to register with the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division. A fingerprint review by the State Law Enforcement Division and the FBI for a criminal background check is required for all persons applying for initial certification to become certified educational personnel.
